Around Boise, Idaho, locals have plenty to say these days about HP and the look of its local campus – and they’re not happy about it. The landscaping, they say, looks neglected. The grass is dying, everything is turning brown and HP doesn’t seem to be doing anything about it.

In one sense, they’re right. HP is allowing things to die off. But it’s not due to neglect. Instead, the campus greenery is withering away for the sake of innovation and environmental responsibility. And, soon, things will look much better.

The engineers and forward-thinking landscape architects at HP are taking an innovative approach to the appearance of the campus, one of the company’s largest locations with some 2,500 employees. And a dramatic transformation, which is coming later this year, will  renew the grounds for a more beautiful, healthier and sustainable future.

The company is at the beginning stages of a landscape overhaul that will replace 31 acres (about the same size as an 18-hole golf course) of resource-intensive turf grass with sustainable, native grasses and plants over the next few months. The current landscaping, which was planted in 1973 when the campus was built on top of farmland, requires weekly mowing, lots of water, pesticides and fertilizer to stay green. 

“In the past, planting large fields of grass was the thing to do. It was the aesthetics of that era,” said Steve Birch, West sub-region manager of corporate real estate and workplace services at HP. “Today’s modern landscape design uses a variety of native plants and aims to reduce the environmental impact of maintaining large monocultures of grass fields.”

 The first phase of the project began in May, when HP began to let the existing grass die out in order to set the stage for a new collection of diverse native grasses that will eventually lower the water consumption, energy usage and pesticides used on campus.

"In order to establish the new native grasses we have to remove the existing turf, If we don’t remove it completely, the species of grass we have now would come back and compete with the newly-planted native grass," Birch said.


HP gets water wise

The Boise landscape project is part of a broader effort to be better environmental stewards, of which water conservation plays a pivotal role.

Replacing turf with native grasses significantly lowers water consumption, according to Birch.  The existing grass requires about 31 inches of water each year to stay green. The new grass will require just four inches of water per year – a reduction of about 87 percent. If necessary, that four inches of water could be cut down to zero “with little to no long-term damage.” Birch said.

This is of particular importance in Idaho, where more than half of the state is classified as having “abnormally dry” conditions as of July 5.

In addition to the Boise site project, two Hewlett-Packard Company sites in California, now shared by HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, responded to local drought conditions by changing landscape and irrigation practices. The campus in Roseville, California cut water consumption for irrigation by 34 percent from 2014 and 70 percent from 2013 by upgrading the irrigation control system and adhering to a strict watering schedule. A site in San Jose completed a turf removal project estimated to save more than 11,300 cubic meters of water per year.

The new native grasses will be allowed to grow to their natural heights (varying from 12-36 inches) with just some minor trimming needed throughout the year. HP’s landscapers in Boise will only need to trim about four or five times a year. HP is committed to reducing the CO2 greenhouse gas emissions that comes from mowing a lawn weekly.  


Increasing biodiversity

Although unbroken stretches of green might seem picturesque in the suburban sprawl of Boise, that same vista isn’t ideal for the local fauna.

“What you see is a monoculture of grass, a landscape without much variety,” Birch said.  “There are less resource-intensive options that are not only ecologically sound but also engaging and beautiful. This does not have to mean rocks and cactuses.” 

Native grasses and trees, such as the Idaho Fescue, ThickSpike Wheatgrass and Cockspur Hawthorne and about a dozen other varieties, will combine for a more diverse landscape.

HP is working with the Bureau of Land Management, the Department of Fish and Game as well as other biologists, ecologists and  conservation experts in the community to develop a palette of plants for the specific microclimates of the site, Birch said. 

Honeybees will be special beneficiaries of this newfound biodiversity.

In recent years, bee populations worldwide have declined due to a combination of such as disease, environmental problems and pestiside use. According to the National Resources Defense Council, honeybees are responsible for approximately one-third of the food that we eat. Without the help from our little furry pollinators, you would be hard pressed to buy your coffee in the morning.  

HP plans minimize use of herbacides and promote conservation so that bee colonies can flourish.“We even have an active bee club on site with multiple boxes of bees and we are creating a showcase for a new bee box to raise awareness of the bees,” Birch said.

Earning climate kudos

Our sustainability strategy supports 16 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, propelling our continued innovation in supply chain responsibility, circular economy integration, and empowerment for migrant workers, refugees and underserved populations. 

HP is being recognized for our relentless dedication to these initiatives tonight at the 33rd annual World Environment Center (WEC) Awards at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. HP Chief Supply Chain Officer Stuart Pann will accept the Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development on behalf of HP, and will be introduced on stage by HP Board Member Aida Alvarez. WEC is a non-profit dedicated to creating environmentally conscious business solutions, and their annual award is one of the most prestigious forms of recognition for global companies and sustainability practices.

Designing for energy efficient excellence

Significant achievements expand beyond just the WEC Gold Medal Award. ENERGY STAR®, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program that helps businesses and individuals save money while protecting our climate through superior energy efficiency, awarded HP with its 2017 Excellence in Energy-Efficient Product Design award last month.

The EPA introduced the ENERGY STAR program in 1992 to help identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse emissions. ENERGY STAR recognized that HP’s ability to deliver significant advancements in printer efficiency and consumer choice goes above and beyond the norm.

Our key product design accomplishments that received accolades include: securing enormous savings in enterprise printing through HP PageWide Technology business printers that use up to 71 percent less energy than comparable laser printers; and committing to designing products that deliver greater energy efficiency, performance and value. Since 2010, HP has reduced energy consumption of its personal computing system portfolio by 25 percent, its HP LaserJet portfolio by 56 percent, and its HP inkjet portfolio by 20 percent on average. Steering the sustainability conversation

HP recently ranked number one in PCs, printing and printer ink on the Walmart sustainability scorecard. Seeking to learn more about our stance on sustainability, Walmart invited HP’s President of the Americas Christoph Schell to participate in a Leadership Listening Session at the company’s Annual Sustainability Milestone Summit last month. 

Gigaton logo.pngDuring the plenary session, Schell and Walmart’s Senior Vice President of Merchandising Greg Hall took to the main stage to discuss how companies can develop energy-efficient products, with Schell highlighting the HP DeskJet 3752 all-in-one printer, which consumes 30 percent less energy while in sleep mode.

That same day, Walmart boldly announced its goal to work with suppliers to eliminate a gigaton of greenhouse gas emissions in their supply chain by 2030. The target, known as Project Gigaton, equates to taking 211 million passenger vehicles off the road for an entire year. HP has publically committed to support this initiative.

Planet Earth. It’s home to more than 7.3 billion people and millions of identified species of animals, insects and plants.

A scientific wonder, the Earth provides the natural resources, such as water, air, and soil, that allow all living creatures on the planet to survive—and thrive.

But today Planet Earth and its inhabitants are at risk.

According to independent analyses conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2016 was the warmest year on record globally and represented the third record year in a row. The analyses noted that the rise in temperature is being driven primarily by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

For HP, lowering GHG emissions across its product portfolio, operations, and supply chain is part of the company’s long-term business strategy and represents its commitment to support the United Nations’ climate agreement signed in Paris in December 2015.


Reducing the impact of HP's products

Founded in 1992, HP’s Design for Environment program has defined how HP develops products that use less energy, require less resources to make and use, and are more easily reused and recycled.

One area of focus is electricity consumption, which represents approximately 70 percent of the GHG emissions associated with the use of HP products. Through design innovations, HP has reduced the energy consumption of its personal systems portfolio by 25 percent, its HP LaserJet portfolio by 56 percent, and its HP inkjet portfolio by 20 percent since 2010.

This innovative spirit continues with recent product offerings, including the newly announced HP PageWide Pro A3 multifunction printers, which have best-in-class energy efficiency when compared to comparable laser printers. And these design advances support HP’s goal to reduce the GHG emissions intensity of its product portfolio by 25 percent by 2020, compared to 2010.

HP’s efforts were recently recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency, which honored the company with a 2017 EPA ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Product Design for its commitment to improving the availability of energy-efficient products in the marketplace.


Designing a circular, low-carbon economy

Today HP is building on this legacy of sustainable design by reinventing product design, business models, and industry supply chains to create a more efficient, circular and low-carbon economy.

Through these efforts HP is helping decouple growth from consumption by developing solutions that enable the company and its customers to keep materials in use at their highest state of value for the longest possible time. These solutions also require less resources to make and use and are more easily repurposed at end of use. 

HP Elite SliceHP Elite SliceFor example, the HP Elite Slice is a compact, yet powerful desktop solution that is smaller in size compared to older ultra-slim desktop towers, which means it requires less materials. At the same time, it consumes 50 percent less energy than a comparable small form factor desktop, which significantly reduces its carbon footprint.

HP is also shifting to flexible service models, which provide real value to customers while reducing waste and costs, extending product lifespans, and increasing reuse and recycling. HP Instant Ink, a consumer-based subscription service, is a great example of this new model. The service ensures that customers never run out of ink when they need it, while helping them lower their environment impact. It reduces costs by up to 50 percent and lowers the carbon footprint related to ink cartridge purchase and disposal by an estimated 70 percent.

And HP is transforming how whole industries design, make and distribute products by helping people create products in a more efficient, economical and environmentally conscious way. For example, its commercial digital on-demand printing can improve efficiencies and reduce costs and waste by better matching supply and demand. In one case, a book printer and publisher found that on-demand printing helped the company cut inventory by 28 percent, reduce warehouse space by 19 percent, and bring 1,100 titles back into print.


Innovating across the enterprise

At the same time, HP is taking steps within its operations and supply chain to reduce its overall carbon footprint. This includes incorporating resource conservation into its day-to-day operations, such as implementing smart building technology in its facilities to identify operating inefficiencies, and shifting to less GHG-intensive energy sources.

 This work is reflected in a pledge HP made in 2016 to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity usage in its global operations. And it supports a commitment HP made in February 2017 to reduce the GHG emissions from its global operations by 25 percent by 2025, compared to 2015 levels. This new commitment builds on two previous goals HP set and achieved to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions from operations.

 Similarly, within HP’s supply chain, personnel work with suppliers to reduce their overall carbon footprint. For example, HP has partnered with BSR, World Wildlife Fund China and World Resources Institute to bring the Energy Efficiency Program to its suppliers in China and Southeast Asia. The program promotes energy efficiency initiatives and enables suppliers to share best practices.

 The program has already helped more than 200 supplier sites cumulatively save more than 500 million kWh of electricity, 800,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions, and an estimated $65 million. These types of results helped HP achieve an industry-first goal to reduce the GHG emissions intensity of first-tier manufacturing and product transportation in its supply chain by 20 percent by 2020, compared to 2010 five years ahead of time.

 HP’s sustainability efforts are driving the company’s vision of engineering amazing technologies that make life better for everyone, everywhere—and create a healthier world that can support the lives and livelihoods of generations to come.

When U.S. consumers drop off their old electronics at local e-waste centers for recycling, most assume their aging gadgets will be safely dismantled and have their components either scrapped or re-used. But that’s not always the case, according to Basel Action Network (BAN), an environmental nonprofit.

Electronics recycling often involves a complex, multi-step supply chain. Many of the downstream operations are in the developing world, where waste is exported for treatment. Once it arrives for processing, oversight is often minimal.

According to BAN, this can lead to unsafe labor and environmental conditions having a devastating impact on the countries receiving electronics recyclables. The ostensibly well-intended act of recycling has the potential to harm workers, their communities and the environment. BAN suggests that greater transparency in electronics recycling supply chains is one way companies could help.

HP has long been committed to responsible processing of used electronics. Now HP is deepening that commitment by disclosing the names and locations of its recycling vendors.

By bringing transparency to its electronics recycling supply chain, HP seeks to inspire other tech companies, retailers, and distributors to follow suit as well as to acknowledge the work of recycling partners to meet HP’s high expectations. This transparency also helps HP’s customers feel confident their end-of-life equipment is adequately treated to ensure data and privacy protection. 

“HP is disclosing its recycling partners to raise the bar for transparency in our industry and to highlight the high standards we set for those vendors,” said Annukka Dickens, HP Director of Human Rights and Supply Chain Responsibility. “We challenge other companies in and outside of the high tech industry to follow our lead and disclose recycler vendor standards and performance, as well as the list of recycling vendors they employ globally.”

Ties back to the circular economy

A key part of HP’s circular economy strategy is responsible recycling of used electronics, which encompasses industry-leading recycling and reuse standards, a robust recycler audit program, and close engagement with recycling partners.

HP is reducing resource consumption by reinventing product design to extend the life of our products, shifting to service models, and transforming how whole industries design, make, and distribute products through disruptive technologies, such as 3D printing.

HP knows from experience that recycling responsibly is no small effort. The company is one of high tech’s most active recyclers, having recaptured and recycled more than 3.3 billion pounds of computer and printing hardware and 682 million ink and toner cartridges since 1987.

Through its HP Planet Partners program, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, HP offers takeback and recycling programs to keep used electronics and printing supplies out of landfills in more than 70 countries and territories. It also collaborates with governments and industry stakeholders to promote innovative solutions for managing electronics equipment at the end of its life cycle.

As part of the company’s stringent recycling vendor management process, HP requires every specialist vendor to execute environmentally-responsible processing techniques, comply with relevant government regulations, and achieve additional commitments like ethical labor practices and conformance to the Basel Convention, which limits shipment of non-functional electronics between countries.

In addition, vendors must attain third-party certification (such as e-Stewards, R2, or WEEELABEX), where applicable, and must also submit to regular audits.

 In 2015, HP conducted audits at 58 facilities in 20 countries, including audits to follow-up on previous findings and confirm ongoing commitment to responsible practices and improved performance.

In extreme cases, vendors are not allowed to continue recycling on HP’s behalf if they do not work to address nonconformance identified during audits.

“People should know how and where their equipment is recycled. We encourage customers to ask questions about what really happens to the equipment they return,” Dickens said.

With the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set to change hands and the future of the U.S. role in the historic Paris climate agreement unknown, it is more important than ever for the private sector to show its commitment to addressing climate change.

In recognition of this reality, HP today announced it will redouble its efforts to slash greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from global operations and strengthen relationships with key organizations that urge businesses to improve environmental performance.

With a new commitment, HP set a target to reduce the GHG emissions from its global operations by 25 percent by 2025, compared to 2015 levels. HP also renewed its partnership with World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Savers Program, a global program to engage business and industry on climate and energy.

The new target is a significant milestone for HP as it accelerates its efforts to reduce the company’s total carbon footprint in accordance with what the world’s climate scientists indicate is required to help keep global warming below 2⁰ Celsius—the threshold agreed internationally for avoiding some of the worst impacts from climate change.

“Business is the force that can demonstrate leadership on climate change,” said Matt Banks, climate and business manager, World Wildlife Fund (WWF). “HP has been progressive in reducing emissions through improving operational efficiency, and is uniquely positioned to raise its voice in important climate policy discussions.”

Since the WWF’s Climate Savers initiative began in 1999, the partners—which include 30 top companies from diverse sectors—have together reduced GHG emissions by over 100 million tons, the same as taking more than 20 million cars off the road.

In 2016, HP Inc.’s first reporting year, the company’s global operations are estimated to account for less than 5 percent of HP’s total carbon footprint, including all the company’s owned and leased facilities, as well as the automobile and aviation fleet within its operational control. HP has set a three-phase approach to reduce its climate impacts across its operations. The first phase is optimizing energy efficiency in its operations and buildings. The other two phases focus on shifting toward less GHG-intensive energy sources, including increased use of on-site renewable power, and through acquired or generated off-site renewable power to offset brown power emissions.

Lowering GHG emissions isn’t only good for the Earth, according to WWF’s Banks, it’s also beneficial for business.

That’s based on a 2013 study by WWF, which proposes the “3% Solution,” a framework that says the corporate sector must reduce GHG emissions by 3 percent per year to be on track to stay below the 2°C warming threshold. The study shows that the framework can drive $190 billion in net savings in the year 2020 alone for the corporate sector in the U.S.

“Setting science-based targets and working with key partners, like WWF, helps us innovate strategies and solutions to realize new opportunities and address business risks,” said Nate Hurst, Chief Sustainability and Social Impact Officer at HP. “By continuously pushing ourselves to reduce our total carbon footprint, we’re ensuring our business is resilient and ready to serve our customers, investors, employees, and other stakeholders as we pave the way toward a low-carbon circular economy future.”

 In Tunisia, where some 40 percent of youth are unemployed and jobs of any kind are hard to come by, the HP Foundation is working to make a difference.

For the past three years, the foundation has been working with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), USAID, the Italian Development Cooperation and other partners on a job-creation project, called “Mashrou3i,” (which in Arabic means, "my project") that fosters a spirit of entrepreneurialism and offers tools that can support fledgling business owners.

Today, the program launched into its second phase, a five-year mission to create some 6,000 jobs and reach more than 25,000 aspiring and existing entrepreneurs in Tunisia.

“Every job created out of this initiative makes a positive impact on the individual’s life and helps support the local community,” said Markus Schwertel, Lead Government Relations Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa at HP. “It truly empowers people to be successful.”infographic_EN_Phase 2-01.png

 In addition to mentoring and technical skills training, participants also have access to HP LIFE, a free, online program of the HP Foundation, which features 27 interactive modules covering business and IT skills training in seven languages, including Arabic and French. During the first phase of the project, about 1,250 jobs and 160 startup companies were created. In addition, more than 12,000 Tunisians took online courses through HP LIFE and nearly 1,400 aspiring entrepreneurs – more than half of whom were women – were coached to help develop, improve or finalize business plans.

Technical Assistance to SMEs.jpgThe new influx of support, which includes a contribution of nearly $1 million cash and in-kind technology from HP and the HP Foundation, will help to expand reach, add staff and grow the project geographically into farther-flung governorates in Tunisia. It will also support the ongoing development of  HP LIFE, where aspiring entrepreneurs can learn—for free—everything from nuts-and-bolts online classes in finance and sales forecasting to social media marketing and presentation skills.

“The Mashrou3i project is a scalable social innovation model with proven results,” said Jihed Jahdour, Managing Director, Tunisia, at HP. “There is an urgent need for innovative solutions that provide access to quality education and enable economic opportunity for everyone everywhere, wherever they are in the world. The second phase of the project signals the continuation of our successful partnership to foster employment opportunities for young men and women in Tunisia.”

HP, as a brand with a deep history in the “ed tech” sector is uniquely positioned to deploy its HP LIFE programming and technology into a region where there’s nearly immediate results.

“This has big implications for the future of learning all over the world, as technology continues to disrupt the existing models of education in the so called developed world as well,” HP’s Schwertel said.

“Instead of discussing how many and what kind of devices are needed in the classrooms, the question is, ‘What are the learning outcomes we want to achieve?” he said. “Engaging learning content for personalized learning like HP LIFE, coupled with technology, enables emerging market countries to leapfrog and to get access to top content of the same quality as anywhere else in the world.”Mashrou3i logo.png
